Mission 6: Echoes of the Interphase
Location: USS Midway
Timeline: M6 MD04 (2268.10.07) 2006
Following the recall order, the crew of the Midway were quickly dropping what they were doing and returning to the ship.
In the next wave of beam ups, Ensign Jason Reece materialized, still dressed in his wetsuit and carrying his surfboard. As he stepped out into the corridor, he almost ran into his commanding officer.
"Oh crap!!" He explained as he quickly swung his surfboard away from hitting the Captain in his midsection. "Im so sorry, Sir!"
Fortunately the Captain ducked out of the way, quick reflexes and years of Judo training. "Well, I'm sorry to interrupt Mr. Reece," the Captain responded with a smirk, "Star Fleet owes everyone a few days of leave... And I'll make sure they deliver."
Jason was still blushing from embarrassment as he replied. "Yes, Sir. I'll find a place to store my board, get changed and be up on the bridge in...thirty minutes?" He hoped he could grab a bite to eat after he was dressed, but would bypass it, if the Captain needed him up at his helm station sooner.
"You have time," Tristan responded, "The galley is up and running and I have instructions for them to serve 24/7 until we launch. We're all going to be on at odd hours until we launch." He looked at the board and chuckled, he himself didn't surf but he knew a few who did back home, "Maybe Mr. Dienstag can program a wave to add to the beach program on the holographic rec deck."
Jason's eyes lit up. "Yes Sir!" Then, when he heard about the option of creating waves on the rec deck, he considered it, then nodded. "I've never heard it done before, Sir, but I'll definitely look into it!"
"Yeah, I wouldn't ask about it immediately though... Mr. Dienstag is trying to restore our computer core... Some yard upgrade went wrong," Tristan responded with a sigh.
The look on the young ensign's face changed from excitement to concern in a flash. "Were any other systems affected? I'll get changed do a thorough inspection of the helm controls, Captain."
"From first report it's just the computer, although with everything routed through it, who knows what other systems are affected," Tristan explained, "Always these set backs when we are under a time crunch."
Jason nodded, all sign of relaxation gone from his features. "I'll have my status report ready for you to read within the next two hours, Captain." He started to turn, but then caught himself, waiting to see if the Captain had anything further for him.
"Thanks," Tristan responded and then sighed, seeing the look on his face, "Sorry to wreck your shoreleave... It never fails..."
Jason gave his commanding officer an honest grin. "When duty calls, Sir." He then excused himself and hurried to his cabin, to get cleaned up and changed into his uniform. He refused to let his Captain...and the entire ship, down.
