The condition blue lights slowly pulsed through the winding deserted corridors of the Midway. The Captain was walking alone a book under his arm. His normally restrained pompadour was at least two inches taller today, a little more Elvis and less professional. His uniform was gone too replaced by a bright red camp shirt. He glanced a blue eye down at the book, sure he had forgotten it, but maybe he just couldn't stay away.
Lucy was walking the other direction. She was out of uniform in the same outfit she had been in with the girls. She was carrying a bag, obviously heading back from the transporter room. She hummed as she walked, with the corridors all but empty it was nice to walk freely.
Her hair was tied back in two low pigtails a d her hazel eyes were fixed on front as she walked. "I should have picked up that book whilst I had the chance..." she said to herself.
The Captain continued his pace and rounded the corner. The two officers nearly collided, both clearly lost in thought. Tristan reached out and gently held her upper arms to prevent the collision. His book fell to the floor, "Commander, my appologies," he said, with a sheepish smile.
"Commander?" Lucy questioned. "Last time I checked, we're not on the clock right now," she laughed. "Heading to the surface I take it?"
Tristan blushed, "Sorry, Lucy, habit given the surrounding," he said, letting go. He dropped down to pick up the book, an old copy of Thunderball. "I stopped in on the parents the other night with Dr. Kitchner, ripped that bandaid off."
Lucy smiled. "It's nice to see parents again. Of course for me, you wouldn't catch me dead anywhere near my 'father'," she told him. "But the girls and I had fun. Did you?"
The Captain nodded, "Yeah, like stepping back in time," he said, "And sorry things aren't good at home..." He tucked the book back under his arm, "Glad you had a good trip, still plenty of time in port yet, so I hope you're not planning on sticking around aboard ship."
"Honestly, I don't have anywhere to go or stay. It's not like I have somewhere to go back to," she explained putting on a smile. "I ran away to Starfleet when I was younger. So I guess my home is my cabin aboard this ship. It does allow me to use the galley when I want though," she chuckled.
"Ugh, are you trying to break my heart," Tristan responded, "Where do you wanna go? Come on, pick somewhere... Bermuda, Bahamas, New York, St. Petersburg? Somewhere else?" A glint of compassion flashed through his eyes.
"Seriously?" Lucy said her eyes wide with surprise. "You want to go somewhere?" She thought about it for a moment. "How about then... Hawaii?"
"Sure I got an Amex Platinum and some sea and sand would do us both good," Tristan responded with a smile, "I'm starting to look like a ghost... Besides, when do we ever have a chance to stop looking over our shoulders every minute of every day?"
Lucy couldn't help but laugh. "Yeah you're right. There's not much sunshine in the depths of space. Not unless you stand by a window when in orbit of a star." she shuffled her position slightly. "Well then, lead the way."
Transporter Room 1 was deserted and the indicator lights on the bright red consoles indicated it was set to automate. It was strange seeing the ship like this... There was never a quiet moment aboard the Midway.
Tristan walked over to the console and set the book down. "Looks like we're packing light," he commented as he keyed in the sequence on the console.
"There's only two rules whilst we're down there ok." Lucy stated as she put a single foot on the transporter pad. "Rule one. No Starfleet or work talk. Ranks, the ship, the crew, none of that." She told him. Then a smile stretched across her face. "And rule two. You have to tell me I look good in my bikini. Because I know you definitely looked last time in the ships pool."
"Deal," Tristan responded with a smile. "It's hard not to look," he added as he walked up to join her on the transporter pad, book back under his arm. The automatic sequence initiated once Tristan was in position.
The light grey bulkheads of the Midway were replaced with the well appointed lobby of the Ritz-Carlton at Turtle Bay on the island of Oahu. The cool breeze blew through the circular lobby, its open air architecture allowing for nearly unrestricted views of the ocean.
"At least we didn't have to come economy," Lucy laughed.
"Nothing but the best, although I would say our ship is more expensive than the average luxury liner," Tristan responded.
A young man wearing a white uniform approached the couple, "Good afternoon Captain Faust... and guest," he said, "Welcome to the Ritz-Carlton," he said, "Suite 101... The door should open at your approach... Your bags will be brought to your suite. If there is anything you need during your stay, please send all requests to Jenkins... That's me... I'll be your concierge for your stay."
The Captain smirked and nodded, "Thank you Jenkins," he said. He looked towards Lucy, "Shall we?" he asked.
"Lead the way," Lucy smiled. She was eager to have a little fun away from the ship.
It was a short walk to their suite. The door did indeed open at their approach, revealing the oppulant accomodations. The entryway opened into a wide foyer of warm koa wood and limestone, the soft glow of recessed lighting giving everything a golden, late-afternoon warmth no matter the hour. To the right, the wall-length windows revealed the sweep of Turtle Bay’s coastline, waves breaking in long white ribbons over black volcanic stone. "So this is what retirement will look like," Tristan mused as he stepped inside. He raised his leg and pulled off one of his black Chelsea boots.
"You're thinking of retirement already?" Lucy smirked. "I was thinking of being much older, a nice cosy cottage in the snow. Grandchildren or great grandchildren over visiting, that sort of thing."
"No, but some days it would be nice," Tristan responded, "Frankly some days I wonder if I'll live long enough to reach retirement, given the dangers of space and everything..." He shook his head, "Sorry, I don't mean to be morbid. I'm just not sure I can plan that far ahead at this point, although what you describe sounds nice."
Lucky let out a laugh. "You're not the only one who thinks that. After all, we work on a Starship. Who knows what we're going to find out there."
Tristan nodded, "Alright, how about we order up some Champagne and whatever else is on the menu card and get away from it all," he said, cheering up.
"Sounds nice. Lets go." Lucy replied.
