Mission Setup
Following the rescue of the Detroit survivors and the destruction of Station Exar, the USS Midway returned to
Starbase 10 for repairs after its confrontation with Arianna D'Tal's Orion pirates. The rescued colonists were transferred to Star Fleet’s care. Ship and crew, although only two weeks out from launch had already served a major combat and rescue operation
The stopover gave Starfleet an opportunity to repair and resupply
Midway, give the young crew a breather and determine the starship's next assignment. The mission established Starbase 10 as the
Midway's operational home and set the stage for the ship's deeper involvement in the Triangle. The ship was now deliberately operating in an area where Federation, Klingon and Romulan interests intersected and where even a routine diplomatic transport could carry significant political consequences.
With Midway undergoing repairs, most of the crew dispersed through Starbase 10 for rest and recreation while the command staff dealt with the aftermath of their first mission. The destruction of Station Exar had temporarily disrupted the slave trade operating in the region. There was already criticism circulating that the Midway was unable to rescue all of the kidnapped colonists before the station had been destroyed.
Nevertheless, Star Fleet formally recognized the crew's performance during the rescue. Members of the crew received commendations and promotion for their actions during the Orion attack, captivity and rescue operation. The recognition marked the first major acknowledgment that Midway's previously inexperienced complement had successfully survived a genuine crisis together.
More importantly, Commodore Brian Anderson, commander of Starbase 10 and Faust's former commanding officer, informed Faust of the Midway's next assignment. Federation representative St. John Talbot and two aides required transportation to Nimbus III, the "Planet of Galactic Peace," where representatives of the Federation, Klingon Empire and Romulan Star Empire were to meet under the framework created by the Organian Peace Treaty. After delivering Talbot, Midway was expected to continue into an extended long-range patrol rather than immediately return to Starbase 10.
The diplomatic assignment carried obvious risks. Fleet Captain Manolis Chiotis, who delivered Talbot to Starbase 10 aboard the USS Franklin, warned Faust that none of the three major powers had much enthusiasm for the Nimbus III experiment and that there were already reasons to worry about Talbot's safety. What appeared on paper to be a simple passenger transfer could therefore have much wider political consequences.
By the end of the layover, repairs and crew preparations were underway and Midway had its new heading: Nimbus III.
